A FEW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS THAT MOST PEOPLE ASK US.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1) WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SPAY OR NEUTER? Best time for Neutering is 9- 11 months of age. Best time to spay is 6-7 months. letting females go thru a heat is great, but not for everyone. Heats begin 6-12 months of age and last anywhere from 20-30 days for first heats. All females are different just as we human girls are.
2)WHAT IS THE BEST FOOD FOR MY PUPPY/DOG? We personal use and love Royal Canin Medium breed puppy food. From there we use and love Royal Canin. We like to think of Royal Canin as old faithful, been around for so many years now. Merick & Fromm are also great food companies. all of these offer a huge variety of flavors too. it is ok to change up flavors monthly, after your puppy turns age 1. Huskies do tend to get bored of the same old flavor and so would we. Venison, Duck, Salmon, Whitefish, & Beef are all husky favorites. DO NOT FEED RAW MEAT EVER. (causes serious aggression in this breed). Feeding raw meats will give parasites and bacteria and lead to serious health issus. Also DO NOT FEED LAMB!!!!!! Huskies are allergic to it and will give him/her the screaming diarrhea.
3) WHAT TREATS DO YOU RECOMMEND? First of all, I do NOT recommend treats until about 7 months of age because everything causes diarrhea in puppies! Use dry kibble (pups food) to reward him/her in training progress. After he/she is old enough there are several great treats by 4-health that are amazing. Offering fresh or frozen blueberries, Bananas, peas, green beans, cooked carrots, cooked broccoli are all great treats too.
4)WHAT SHAMPOO DO YOU RECOMMEND AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BATHE MY DOG? Best dog shampoo which we use throughout there entire life is Aussie kids (human shampoo). No Parabens and no silicone also tear free. Dog shampoo is very very harsh for this breed. If your husky swims a lot in the summer then you will need miconazole shampoo also, just for summertime. Bathe him/her in that once a month in the summer. Lots of swimming causes yeast in there coat. Swimming is great, ours swim daily in the warmer months. Huskies only need a bath twice a year otherwise. Over bathing this breed causes dry skin, alopecia, patchy hair loss.
5)HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GROOM OR GO TO THE GROOMERS? I do not like groomers for this breed. Only because groomers are NOT breed specific. They cut, trim, shave fur which is an absolute NO NO for this breed. I highly recommend that you brush your pup monthly. Never cut the fur, never cut the tuffs (fur on bottom of feet). Grooming is bonding and really great for pet owners to do this themselves. Earns you trust and shows affection and pack leadership. Once a month you should also trim nails back just a Tad bit. Be careful you don't go to far back and cut the quicks. A good quick stop powder is recommended to keep on hand in case this happens.
6)SHOULD I BUY A NEW CRATE AND CRATE TRANE? Crating this breed just during the puppy training phase is highly recommended for Huskies. For starters they must grow a bladder and also learn to hold it. They are only newborn babies no different from human babies, so time and patience is needed for the first few months you have your puppy home. Also while you are away you must crate. Puppies do not know the difference between your couch or electrical cords and there toys. Letting your new puppy run free while unsupervised can be extremely dangerous. Buy a big crate that has a divider in it. At 8 weeks you only want to give them enough room to turn around and sleep. Too big of an area will lead to unsuccessful potty training. When your pup is about a year old, already spay/neutered, you can give them short time frames to "test him/her out". After they have graduated from puppy hood you can let them run the house freely. This is around 1.5-2 years of age. You will want to do several trial periods before totally trusting them.
7)WHEN SHOULD I START HEARTWORM PREVENTION? WHICH ONE DO YOU RECOMMEND? WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE A VET VISIT, AND WHAT DO I EXPECT AT MY FIRST VISIT? Your pups 1st vet visit should be right at 11 weeks of age. At his first vet visit at your place he/she should get his 3rd combo vaccination, heartguard plus, advantix II (monthly flea tick). If your vet doesn't carry these specific ones, ask for a script and order it online yourself. These are the very very best that we have personally been using for 21 years. If you use Nexguard, Simparica, Bravecto, or ANY CHEWABLE flea/tick medication, we will NOT honor our health guarantee. Those CHEWABLES are extremely dangerous and have been causing seizures and death in all breeds around the world!!!!!!!!
8) WHAT IS NUVET AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? CAN I BUY IT FROM MY VET?Siberian Huskies are "ZINC DEFICIENT " by breed. That is why NuVet supplements are a huge part of our health guarantee. These have the proper amount of zinc needed daily plus other beneficial vitamins they need on a daily basis to grow into a healthy adult. The antioxidants in these greatly improve immune responses to the vaccines they get. This greatly improves there immune system needed to fight off bacteria that is ingested daily since dogs put everything in there mouth. Health is our main priority and we believe 100% in NuVet. Even if your vet carries these supplements, you must get them through my code only thru the Nuvet website. The code is MY CODE and they email me monthly to inform me of who is on it or not for my health guarantee. MY CODE FOR NUVET IS 83405. You can call 1-800-474-7044 or order online.
9.) Are Huskies good with other pets? cats? As long as you get your husky as a puppy 8-16 weeks old they become bff's. An older rescue husky from a shelter would/could be a problem for other pets in the home bcuz Huskies have a huge predator drive.
10.) When can I take my puppy in public places? DO NOT bring your puppy into pet stores, dog parks, ect.....until all necessary puppy vaccinations have been given. Puppies need 4 rounds of vaccines to complete there puppy shots. Usually by 16 weeks of age all puppy vaccines are complete, however some veterinarians give rabies vaccines as late as 20 weeks of age.
11.) When are next shots due? Will my vet know what my puppy needs? All puppy vaccines that have been given along with de-wormimgs are written in your vet booklet that comes home with your puppy. Next due date for vaccines are also written in puppies vet booklet along with food schedule he/she is on. Your veterinarian will know what your puppy needs next, but definitely bring your vet book from me with your puppy to his/her first appointment.
12.) How soon can I walk/run with my new puppy? You can begin short walks as soon as puppy vaccines are complete. When it seems your puppy needs a rest definitely stop and respect that, this is a newborn puppy. Do not full on run with your husky until about 10 months of age. It's very important to let your puppy grow there structure/frame and some muscle before running to prevent a torn ACL or injury.
